Moving Checklist
4 Weeks Before
• Clean out your closets, attic, basement, cabinets and shelves. Have a
garage sale or discard anything you don't need.
• Donate unwanted items to charitable organizations
• Take a complete inventory of items to be moved - videotape each room, closet
and storage area.
• Keep a detailed record and receipts of your moving expenses for income tax
purposes. This includes transportation, lodging, meals, etc.
• Reserve a truck or contact a moving company
• Send out address change notifications
• Collect your Vital Records (medical, insurance, school, tax, etc.)
• Check your Homeowners Insurance. It may be applied to your new residence. Be
sure to coordinate insurance so you're immediately covered on your new
residence.
• Check on club membership fees. The money may be refunded or you might consider
transferring/selling the membership to a friend.
3 Weeks Before
• Find boxes & packing materials
• Begin packing items you won't be using
• Make travel/hotel/car reservations
• Ask your physician and dentist for referrals in the new location.
2 Weeks Before
• Plan for special needs of infants & small children
• Consult a veterinarian about pet transportation
• Cancel any home delivery services
• Transfer bank accounts to your new area
• Begin serious packing of your remaining household items
1 Week Before
• Pick up items you've loaned out or had serviced
• Return borrowed items such as videos & library books
• Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy in the area
• Check to make sure you didn't leave anything at the dry cleaners
• Drain fuel from power equipment
• Use up food on hand
• Defrost refrigerator & freezer
• Pack a travel kit
• Help prepare your children for the move and trip by providing them with their
own special treasures. Set aside toys and games for the kids and pack a box of
snacks for your trip.
• Check that all appliances are off & leave refrigerator/freezer door ajar
• Leave all keys and garage door openers needed by new occupant
• Turn off lights & heat
